In a world that moves fast, there’s something grounding about an object built slowly. At Furnistør, a chair isn’t just made — it’s brought to life. Each piece carries the imprint of materials, hands, and decisions that extend far beyond the final form you see in your space.
It begins with wood. We work primarily with solid European oak, sourced from sustainably managed forests. Oak is chosen not only for its strength, but for the quiet beauty in its grain — a surface that softens with age and reflects light in subtle ways.
Before a single cut is made, each board is reviewed: tension, direction, natural flaws. We select planks for consistency in tone and a balanced grain pattern. There’s a tactile memory involved here — one that machines can’t replicate.
The components — legs, seat, backrest — are cut, shaped, and sanded by hand. Whenever possible, we use traditional joinery techniques like mortise and tenon or dowel joints. These methods, though slower, create stronger, longer-lasting connections that don’t rely on excess glue or hidden metal brackets.
“We want the structure to be honest — no tricks, no shortcuts. If you turn the chair upside down, it should still make sense.”
— Freja, Workshop Lead
Once the form is complete, finishing becomes the next language. We don’t lacquer our chairs to shine — we oil them to breathe. The finish brings out the natural tone of the wood without sealing it in plastic. This allows the material to age gracefully and be refreshed over time.

During the finishing process, we also pay close attention to feel. The underside of the seat, the edge where your fingers grip — every surface is touched and refined. We often describe this step as “editing” more than building. It’s where restraint shows the most.
By the time a chair leaves the workshop, it has passed through many hands — all within the same team. We don’t outsource finishing, inspection, or packaging. The same people who shaped the piece also wrap it for delivery, adding a personal card with care instructions and our mark of origin.
When the chair arrives in your home, it’s not just a product. It’s the result of time, touch, and intention — something to live with for years, not seasons.
